Morea beautifully realized gothic thriller from bombay talkies. ashok kumar, the first true superstar of bollywood, discovers his mansion is haunted by an attractive ghost. from a legend surrounding the house and a portrait that very much resembles him, he deduces that he is the reincarnation of the lost love she sings to every night. his obsession grows so strong that she nearly convinces him to murder on her behalf -- before being saved by a friend and going through with his impending marriage. years pass, he travels widely, but everywhere he is haunted by her song. the inescapable ticking of clocks fuels his madness. first rate cinematography and music and a twisting plot make this compelling over the 2+ hour run time. i'm still not completely sold on the last 10 mins but it was a great ride to that point with a terrific kumar performance. happy haunting!
the muslim social reordered as lush allahabadi gothic - the supernatural gradually revealed to be a tale of women trapped and the poisonous power of the desire that social structure creates. few films create such an all encompassing world, or use the potential of song as structure with such force.

it is very difficult to forget love, after all
aesthetic perfection, and i say this fully aware of these bouncing thoughts of mine -- that these colorless talkies become more and more fantastical as the world around us (me) becomes that much more obsessed with a (false) material ground reality. i too am aware of how little context i have for this world, not only past but in a past i can't begin to relate with, but what does come through particularly is the overwhelming sense of longing. an abandoned house realized in time again, not only in the memory of homeness that it stood for but the displaced anxiety at its loss there-of -- realized in a…
This is one of the most gorgeous melodramas I have EVER seen.
'You were intoxicated by that poison, which you consumed thinking it was a cold drink. Slow poison often tastes sweet. And deceit is always beautiful'
A twisting tale of other-worldly romantic longing, nicely textured, haunting and beautiful. The drama kind of unfolds slowly over several giant blocks hitting on certain emotional notes, so I can’t say I was always carried off into the inner worlds of the characters. But plenty of the wonderful images gain strength from their stillness so I’d be hesitant to have the film trade that for something more intense, but I think a very creative filmmaker could’ve found some ways to pull off both. I wouldn’t class this among my favorites of the era, but it’s certainly striking into some unique moods I haven’t found elsewhere.

Kamal Amrohi directs this classic mystery thriller about a young man who takes shelter in a haunted mansion on a stormy night. Starring Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. In Hindi with English subtitles.
This was India’s first so-called horror film when it was first released but now it is definitely considered to be more a thriller film than a horror.

The films star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson. Twilight all parts in hindi.
Still, it was one of the biggest hits at the Indian Box Office when it was released in 1949, being declared a Super Hit and I can understand why.
Ashok Kumar gives a very good performance in his role as Hari, the man who takes shelter but soon discovers it has a dark history behind it. He suits his role very…

Next level and a half. Gonna think about this for a year straight probably, lol.
haunting tale of a visiting ghost lady

This is actually quite beautiful, all expressionistic lighting falling studio bound sets, and also deliberate & obsessive, approaching romance like a fairy tale. Long live artifice! It traffics in actual, surrealist l'mour fou, and there are also so-o-o many songs to pad out the length.
Not sure I understood the ending but it's a beguiling vision, a musical take on Du Maurier.
